Dr. Vicki Tatum

Dr. Tatum is a native South Carolinian, born in Anderson, SC. She has lived in many places in North and South Carolina and a few in Virginia. Her father, Jack Tatum, worked in the textile industry after graduating from Clemson University. When Dr. Tatum was 12 years old, she had her braces put on and her love for dentistry began. From that age, she new she wanted to be a dentist and never strayed from that goal.

During high school in Rutherfordton, NC, Vicki was nominated for The North Carolina School of Science and Math (NCSSM). She was chosen to go there and be a part of the first graduating class of this new, innovative, public boarding school.

Upon graduating from NCSSM, she received a full academic scholarship to attend Wofford College. She matriculated from Wofford with a BS in Math, graduating Summa Cum Laude and was chosen for Phi Beta Kappa. Two weeks after graduation she entered The Medical University of SC (MUSC).

Starting in the summer of 1986, Vicki entered the Class of 1990, College of Dental Medicine, MUSC. She graduated from there second in her class and was chosen for Omicron Kappa Upsilon (OKU).

After graduation from Dental School, Dr. Tatum decided to attend Emory University for a 1-year general practice residency. She was trying to make a decision about whether to go into practice as a general dentist or an oral surgeon. After the year at Emory, spending much time working in the hospital and with the oral surgery residents, she decided to go into private practice as a general dentist.

Since July 1991, Dr. Tatum has been practicing on Courtenay Drive in Charleston, SC, less than a half mile from MUSC where she attended dental school. She taught part-time at the dental school for 6 years and was elected president of the Alumni Association of the College of Dental Medicine for a 1-year term.

Dr. Tatum has been a member of many professional organizations, some of which are; The American Dental Association (ADA), The SC Dental Association where she served as a delegate, the Charleston Dental Society, The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry and The St. Andrews Rotary Club.

She believes in volunteering, and along with her community involvement with Rotary, she volunteers at two free dental clinics, The John's Island Wellness House and East Cooper Community Outreach Dental Clinic.

She and both of her chair side assistants graduated from Las Vegas Institute posterior esthetic dentistry course. She and her staff attend annual continuing education classes to remain up-to-date, to provide her patients with the latest technology in dentistry.

Starting at age 12, Dr. Tatum has always wanted to do what she is doing today. She constantly redefines her goals to provide beautiful, quality dentistry in a relaxed, educational atmosphere for those who seek it. Her record shows the excellent training she has received. Her attitude shows that she actually loves what she does.

The Tatum Dentistry Team

Sheila – Dental Assistant

I am fortunate to be a native Charlestonian.  I have a wonderful family – three children and three grandchildren.

I have been a dental professional since 1993, and part of Dr. Tatum’s dental team since 1998.  My dental training includes the Las Vegas Institute of Advanced Dental Studies, many continuing education seminars on cosmetic and restorative dentistry, as well as implants.  I am very excited about my latest training on the iTero, a 3D scanner of your teeth, eliminating messy impressions.

I enjoy being a part of this dental team and staying on the cutting edge of technology.

I also enjoy being a “Mom” and spending time with my precious grandchildren.  My husband and I like spending time biking and working in our garden.  My true passion is competing in dog sports with my 3 year old Labrador “Maggie”.  We travel around the southeast competing in agility.

Izetta (Izzy) – Dental Assistant

I am a native of Charleston, SC.  My husband was in the US Army for 10 years, so I was fortunate to have the opportunity to travel to several different places like Germany, Oklahoma, and Georgia.  I have two wonderful sons named Marcus and Brandon.

I graduated from the Trident Technical College Dental Program in 2000.  I love being a dental assistant because I love helping people in their time of need.  I also love the look on patient’s faces when they walk out of the office with a beautiful new smile.  It makes me feel very good.

In my spare time, I enjoy working out, doing Zumba, shopping, reading, and going to church.

Angela – Registered Dental Hygienist

I am a native Charlestonian, raised West of the Ashley, and attended the College of Charleston and Trident Technical College for my education in health science.  I have been a licensed dental hygienist since 1994.  My beautiful daughter, Sarah was also born that eventful year.  During the end of October 2003, I came to work with Dr. Vicki Tatum, and my career as a hygienist changed in so many positive ways.  I couldn’t conceive myself working in any other practice!

I work along side the finest team of dental professionals that are also my friends and family away from home.  With their help, I am able to create a comfortable and calm atmosphere for my patients.

In my spare time, I love working with my hands and feel the need for a creative outlet when I am at home.  Creating jewelry with copper, as well as making lamp work glass beads are two of my passions.  I am also drawn to the dirt, as is any natural gardener.

Rhinda – Registered Dental Hygienist

I have been a part of Dr. Tatum’s team since I graduated hygiene school in 2007.  Together we travel to different conferences to further enlighten ourselves with the new and upcoming trends of our dental world.  Keeping up with the new technologies in our field is very important to Dr. Tatum, which also helps us in patient care and comfort.

In my spare times my husband, Ben and I play and practice the greatest game ever played, golf.  We also enjoy going to Charleston sporting events at The Joe and Blackbaud Stadium.  When we are not playing golf, we load up our 3 dogs and drive out to Edisto Beach for the day.

Robb – Office Manager

I have 20+ years of experience in the dental field, primarily in Administration Business Accounting.  I have been fortunate to train with Dr. Madow at TBSE, the Las Vegas Institute for Dental Excellence, and Phillips Sonicare to offer the best service I can to our patients.  I have a Bachelor of Science in Accounting, and a Masters of Business Administration.

In my spare time, I enjoy playing golf, working in the yard, travel and football season.
